The Kenya Industrial Property Institute is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Industrialization established under the Industrial Property Act 2001 to administer and promote Industrial property rights (IPRs) in Kenya.

Its main functions include registration of patents, trademarks, industrial resigns, utility models and technovations; promotion of innovation and inventive activities; dissemination of IP information to the public, screening of technology transfer agreements and licenses and to offer training in IPR.

The Institute wishes to recruit staff to fill the following posts:

PRINCIPAL EXAMINER - GRADE KP 2b 1 POSITION

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Adegree in biological, natural or physical sciences.
  • A Masters in Intellectual Property form a recognized Institution.
  • At least five (5) years experience as senior examiner in either Patents,Trade Marks or both or five (5) years experience working with a regional or multilateral IP office.
  • Computer literate.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of PCT rules. Madrid System, ARIPO Protocols and WIPO registration systems.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of Polite, Espace and other IP databases.
  • Must demonstrate written analytical skills in Intellectual Property issues.
  • At least three (3) years experience in a Senior Management position.
Duties and Responsibilities Include;
  1. Coordinating and supervising the activities in trade k and Patent Divisions.
  2. Preparation of the Institute's Annual Activities Report
  3. Be in charge of all outreach activities and implement outreach strategy of the Institute.
  4. Sourcing for funds and scholarships for further training of examiners
  5. advising and assisting in formulation of country position on topical IP issues
  6. Prepare Quarterly Performance Reports for the Institute in accordance with the Performance Contract.
  7. Reviewing and updating Patent.Trademark. Industrial Design and all Examiners Manuals and Documentation of the Institute.
  8. In liaison with ICT department, develop new automation strategic programmes and monitor effective implementation within the Divisions.
  9. Formulate and implement programmes to operationalize vision 2030 in line with KIPI mandate
ASSISTANT CHIEF PATENT EXAMINER - GRADE KP 4a 1 POSITION

Qualifications / Requirements

Applicants must have the following qualifications
  1. Masters Degree in Intellectual Property.
  2. A management course lasting not less than three (3) weeks at a recognized Institution.
  3. Served for a minimum period of three (3) years in the grade
  4. Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
  5. Demonstrated organization ability and efficiency in management of Industrial Property.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  1. Collect, collate and prepare data and analyse national Industrial Property Statistics.
  2. Be responsible for introducing and implementing innovative and new technologies in processing of patent documentation.
  3. Assist the Planning Section in implementing and reviewing The Strategic Plan of the Institute.
  4. Conduct substantive examination of patents, industrial designs and utility model applications.
  5. In consultation with the Legal Division, recommend and justify any proposed amendments to the Industrial Property Act.
ASSISTANT CHIEF TRADE MARK EXAMINER

GRADE KP 4a 1 POSITION

Qualifications / Requirements

Applicants must have the following qualifications:
  1. Masters Degree in Intellectual Property.
  2. A management course lasting not less than three (3)
  3. Served for a minimum period of three (3) years in the grade of a Senior Trade Mark Examiner or an equivalent position,
  4. Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results
  5. Demonstrated organisational ability and efficiency in management of Industrial Property
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  1. Collect, collate arid prepare data and analyse national industrial property statistics
  2. Be responsible for introducing and implementing innovative and new technologies in processing of trademark documentation.
  3. Assist the Planning Section in implementing and reviewing the Strategic Plan of the Institute.
  4. Coordinate and supervise activities concerning examination and search of trademarks, service marks and geographical indications.
  5. Conduct substantive examination of trademark applications.
  6. Justify any proposed amendments to legislation governing trademarks in Kenya.
SENIOR TRADE MARK ASSISTANT - GRADE KP 6 1 POSITION

Requirements / Qualifications
  1. Higher National Diploma.
  2. Computer literate and working knowledge of IP databases.
  3. Knowledge of the national, regional 'and international Trademark registration systems.
  4. At least three (3) years as a Trade Mark Assistant I or six (6) years experience on practical aspects of trademark registration processes.
  5. Accounting skills.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  1. Carry out trademark formality examinations in conjunction with examiners.
  2. Collect and collate data for inclusion in the Industrial Property Journal.
  3. Be responsible for implementing performance targets for officers under him or her.
  4. Custody, maintenance and ensure accuracy of registers maintained under the Trade Marks Act
  5. Undertake official searches as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
  6. Be responsible for effective implementation of post-registration activities relating to trademarks.
  7. Be responsible for the accuracy and updating of data in the Institute's automation database for the trade mark registry.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY OFFICER

GRADE KP 7 1 POSITION

Qualifications / Requirements
  1. Certificate in Computer Science or in IMIS, MCSE or other relevant professional IT qualifications from recognized Institutions.
  2. Two (2) years experience in ICT as an operator or user support.
  3. Proficiency with other applications including Oracle, Internet, Web mail, Ms Office,Windows NT, Unix etc.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  1. Day to day administration of the Information and CommunicattonTechnology system.
  2. Production of user reports with assistance of the ICT
  3. Undertake regular back ups of the IPAS system or any other system as may be required.
  4. Assist in Information and Communication Technology trouble shooting or problem management, less fatal in nature.
PATENT ASSISTANT - GRADE KP 7

Applicants must have the following qualifications:

Qualifications / Requirements Include:
  1. Diploma in archives and records management fro
  2. Have successfully completed a recognized introduce course for Industrial Property.
  3. Served for a minimum period of three (3) years at the grade of Patent Assistant II.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Receive and process applications for patent applications as assigned
  2. assist in the induction of interns and new officers to the institute
  3. Assist in compiling the patent data for publication in the
  4. Assist in Supervision of data capture and verification in respective registry.
  5. Undertake problem logging by various users and assign for resolution
  6. Produce statistics on system availability or unavailability

This job advert perhaps should have been posted under the labele "intellectual Property" which makes more sense considering the nature of the work involved.
