Department for International Development (DFID) Jobs and Career Opportunities

The Department for International Development (DFID) is leading the British government's fight against world poverty. Our client DFID Uganda is seeking to recruit two dynamic, experienced and adaptable individuals to join its country team.

1. Recovery and Development Adviser for Northern Uganda

DFID Uganda's new country programme will have a specific focus on northern Uganda. As a contribution towards hastening development and delivery of the early benefits of peace to the people of northern Uganda, DFID is currently designing its programme to support recovery and development in northern Uganda and is looking for a dynamic, experienced professional.

DFID Uganda is seeking to fill this vacancy on a 3-year fixed term contract to be responsible for the effective management of this new programme and will be based in the DFID Uganda Office in Kampala.

The Key tasks:

  • Manage the implementation of DFID's recovery programme for northern Uganda which is likely to focus on service delivery, supporting building of local government capacity to deliver long term development in the North, tackling vulnerability and rebuilding livelihoods.
  • Be lead adviser on northern Uganda, managing the coordination of other DFID advisers on technical issues of DFID's programme in the north.
  • Improve coherence and consistency of DFID's programme with those of key partners in particular ensuring that our programme is linked with the NDP and the PROP and represent DFID in meetings on northern Uganda.
  • Maintain and further develop liaison and information exchange with other parts of DFID/HMG on post-conflict recovery and development issues ensuring that policy at a central level is informed by DFID Uganda's experiences and vice versa.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A first degree and a Masters degree or equivalent postgraduate qualifica¬tion in relevant development related field. Additional related qualifications will be an advantage.
  • Five years relevant professional experience working in either an interna¬tional organisation, government or private sector in Uganda.
  • Strong development background in service delivery, e.g. health, education, water & sanitation, livelihoods.
  • Thorough understanding of national, regional and local Ugandan politics.
  • Experience of working in northern Uganda would be an advantage.
  • Experience working on infrastructure development projects would be an advantage.
  • Experience of developing and managing projects for an international organisation preferred.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills and ability to work efficiently within a team, under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.

2. Head of Communications

DFID Uganda needs a communications specialist to lead on its communications. He/She will lead the development, implementation and monitoring of a Communication Strategy and Action Plan for DFID Uganda's new programme.

The key tasks:
  • Lead on the development and implementation of the DFID Uganda Communications Strategy and Action Plan.
  • Provide guidance and support to DFID Uganda team to ensure delivery of strategic communications objectives.
  • Respond to demands for information on DFID's work in Uganda from DFID headquarters, and others including the public, local and interna¬tional organisations.
  • Lead on DFID's engagement with the Ugandan media.
  • Lead on production of all DFID Uganda communications materials.
  • Maintain data base of all DFID funded work in Uganda and explore communications opportunities for this work.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree from a reputed university in the field of communications
  • Minimum of 5 years or more of solid communication experience and knowledge.
  • A proven strong ability to work independently and deliver results is essential.
  • Good experience and understanding of working with the media.
  • Good command of spoken and written English.
  • Strong working knowledge of basic Microsoft programmes - Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
  • Must have basic knowledge of or be willing to learn web-design.
