1. Registered Clinical Officer III
Job Group ‘H’

Requirement for appointment

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must:

(i) have successful completed at least three (3) years pre-service training at a Medical Training College or any other recognized Medical Training Institution and have been awarded a Diploma in Clinical Medicine or its equivalent; and

(ii) have been registered by the Clinical Officers Council.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work at this level will be carried out under the guidance of a more senior officer.

Specifically, duties and responsibilities will involve provision, supervision and planning of nursing care at an out-patient department or ward in a hospital.

In addition, the officer will be expected to assess patients’ needs for nursing services; verify and maintain information relating to patient admissions; keep records of drugs and other supplies; and guide, supervise and counsel staff performing routine clinical duties

2. Registered Nursing Officer III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to the grade of Nursing Officer III, a candidate must:- have successful completed a three (3) years pre-service training at a Medical Training Centre or at any other recognized training institution and have been awarded the Kenya Registered Nurse or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse Certificate by the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Council of Kenya.

Duties and Responsibilities

This will be the entry grade into the Nursing Officers’ Cadre.

Work at this level will be limited in scope and complexity and will be carried out under the guidance of a more senior officer.

Specifically, duties and responsibilities will involve provision, supervision and planning of nursing care at an out-patient department or ward in a hospital.

In addition, the officer will be expected to assess patients’ needs for nursing services; verify and maintain information relating to patient admissions; keep records of drugs and other supplies; and guide, supervise and counsel staff performing routine clinical duties

3. Medical Laboratory Technologists III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to the grade of Medical Laboratory Technologists III, a candidate must:-

(i) have successful completed at least three (3) years pre-service training at a Medical Training College or any other recognized by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board and have been awarded a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences; and

(ii) be registered by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technician and Technologists Board as a Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry grade into the Medical Laboratory Technologists cadre.

Work at this will be of limited scope and complexity and will be carried out under the guidance of a more senior officer.

Specific duties and responsibilities will include offering general diagnostic or other laboratory services in a medical laboratory, blood transfusion services or Division of Vector Borne Diseases.

4. Pharmaceutical Technologist III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to the grade of Pharmaceutical Technologist III , a candidate must:- have successfully completed three years Pre-service training at a Medical Training centre or at any other recognized training institution and have been awarded a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology, or possess an equivalent recognized qualification.

Applicants must also be enrolled with Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry grade into the Pharmaceutical Technologist cadre.

Work at this level is carried out under the guidance of a more senior officer.

Duties and responsibilities mainly involve dispensing and compounding medicine, verifying and maintaining information relating to drugs issued to patients; ordering and recording of drugs and other supplies; guiding and counseling trainees and supervision of other staff working under him/her.

5. Physiotherapist III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to the grade of Deputy Chief Physiotherapist, an officer must:- have successfully completed at least three (3) years pre-service training at a Medical Training College and have been awarded a Diploma in Physiotherapy or posses an equivalent qualification from a recognized Medical Training Institution

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry grade into the Physiotherapist cadre.

Duties and responsibilities at this level will be limited scope and complexity and the officer will normally work under the guidance of an experienced senior officer.

Work mainly involves planning and supervision for provision of physiotherapy services to patients at an out-patient department or in a ward or those patients referred for physiotherapy in health institution.

In addition, the officer will be expected to assess patients needs including rehabilitation, verify and maintain information relating to patients, order and maintain records of relevant supplies including finished articles made at the physiotherapy Department as well as guiding, supervising and counseling staff working under him.

6. Occupational Therapist III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, candidates must:- have successfully completed at least three (3) years pre-service training at a Medical Training College and have been awarded a Diploma in Occupational Therapy or possess an equivalent qualification from a recognized Medical Training Institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry grade into the Occupational Therapist cadre.

Duties and responsibilities at this level will be of limited scope and complexity and the officer will normally work under the guidance of an experienced Senior Officer.

Work mainly involves planning and supervision for provision of occupational therapy services to patients at an out-patient department or in a ward or those patients referred for occupational therapy in health institution.

In addition, the officer will be expected to assess patients needs including rehabilitation, verify and maintain information relating to patients, order and maintain records of relevant supplies including finished articles made at the Occupational Therapy Department as well as guiding, supervising and counseling staff working under him/her.

7. Orthopaedic Technologist III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, candidates must:- have successfully completed at least three (3) years pre-service training at a Medical Training Centre and have been awarded a diploma in Orthopedic Technology or possess an equivalent qualification from any other recognized Medical Training Institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry grade into the Orthopaedic Technologist cadre, work at this level is of limited scope and complexity and is carried out under the guidance of a more senior officer.

Duties and responsibilities involve provision of supportive services in Orthopaedics which entail preparation and fitting of appliances that are required in Orthopaedics in Health Institutions.

In addition, the officer will be expected to assess patients needs; verify and maintain information relating to patients; order and maintain records of supplies as well as guiding, supervising and counseling of staff working under him/her.

8. Plaster Technician III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to the grade of Plaster Technician III, a candidate must:- have successfully completed at least two(2) years pre-service training at Kenya Medical Training Centre (KMTC) or any other recognized Training Institution and Have been awarded the Plaster Technician’s Certificate.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the normal entry grade into Plaster Technician cadre.

Work at this level involves a variety of duties and responsibilities of a limited scope and complexity under the guidance and supervision of a more senior officer.

Specifically, the duties and responsibilities include application and removal of plaster and traction; recording of procedure carried out on patients; counseling patients; ordering plaster and other supplies and assisting in planning and organizing orthopaedic care

9. Medical Social Workers III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to the grade of Social Welfare Officer III, a candidate must have:- For appointment to this grade, candidates must be in possession of a Diploma in any of the following disciplines: Sociology, Social work, Psychology, Mental Health, Anthropology, Counselling or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution

Duties and Responsibilities

This will be entry for Diploma Holders.

At this level an officer will be deployed in either a Borstal Institution, a Youth Corrective Training Centre or in a small Prison.

Duties and responsibilities will involve taking statistics on matters pertaining to prisoners’ welfare services; individual counseling of prisoners and mobilizing prison staff and inmates on awareness on pandemic diseases.

10. Health Administrative Officers III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must:- Have a Diploma in any of the following: Health Management Hospital Administration, Business Administration or its equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry and training grade for this cadre. An officer at this level may be deployed at a Sub – District Hospital, Rural Health Training Centre, Department or a Unit within a Large Hospital or to a specific Health Programme where he/she will be exposed to various administrative duties which will include procurement, provision and maintenance of facilities and general upkeep of the hospital.

The officer will work under supervision of a more senior officer.

11. Nutrition Officer III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must be in possession of a Diploma in Nutrition from a recognized institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry grade for Diploma holders.the officer work under guidance of a more senior officer and duties will include:-
  • Planning, monitoring, implementing and evaluating specific nutrition project in the community
  • Sensitizing and working with community workers particularly in Agriculture, Social services, Education and other agencies to help them understand more the problems in the community and advocate actions for improvement; and
  • Supervise staff working under the officer.
12. Public Health Officer III

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade of Public Health Officer III, a candidate must have:- A Diploma in Environmental Health Science from KMTC or any other recognized training institution

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry and training grade into the Public Health Officers cadres.

An officer at this level will work under the supervision and guidance of a more experienced Public Health Officer.

Duties and responsibilities will include:-
  • Improvement of sanitation in markets, trading centres and townships within their area of jurisdiction by ensuring proper disposal of solid wastes, investigation and control of insect vectors for diseases and rodents;
  • General administration of Public Health services;
  • Planning and participating in health education activities including improvement of sanitation in villages and homesteads
  • Prevention and control of communicable diseases, participation in immunization programmes, supervision of Public Health Technician and other junior staff working under him/her.
13. Inspector Drugs III
Job Group ‘H’
Twenty (20) Posts

Salary Scale: Ksh. 16,692 x 835 -17,527 x 876 – 18,403 x 920 -19,323 x 966 -20,289 p.m

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to the grade Inspector of Drugs III, a candidate must have:-
  • a diploma in Pharmacy from Kenya Medical Training College; or any other recognized institution by the pharmacy and Poisons Board.
  • Enrolled with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. (diploma in law will be an added advantage).
Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry grade for this cadre and an officer at this level will be considered as a training grade.

Duties and responsibilities will include
  • maintaining a register of all medical institutions both private and public;
  • maintaining a register of all wholesale and retail dealers in drugs and poisons;
  • carrying out inspections to ensure that medical practitioner licenses are secured and renewed regularly, statutory records are duly kept by authorized sellers of poisons, dispensed prescriptions originate from duly qualified medical practitioners, dentists and veterinary surgeons;
  • monitoring the flow of drugs from the store-the pharmacy to the wards and comparing previous consumption rates to detect any anomalies and assign responsibility for them through investigations;
  • monitoring the rates of consumption of Dangerous Drugs (narcotics) in all medical institutions and submitting regular reports quarterly;
  • ensuring that imports and exports of drugs are accompanied with the necessary documentation from competent authorities and ensuring that drugs on the market in his area of jurisdiction are registered by the Pharmacy and Poison Board and that such registration is renewed regularly as per the regulations.
The officer may head a division and will be responsible to the Inspector of Drugs heading the district.

14. Clinical Psychologist III
