Preparation of Conservation Enterprise Decision Support Tool

Sustainable Conservation Enterprise Support Project

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), an international conservation organization with its Headquarters’ in Nairobi is requesting for proposals from Technical Writers in preparation of a Conservation Enterprise Decision Support Toolkit.


AWF is implementing conservation enterprises as an intervention strategy to create incentives to landowners for sustainable wildlife management.

AWF intends to develop a decision support toolkit that shall be used as a practical guide to practitioners in this sector.

Broadly, this tool is intended to:
  1. help decision-makers in the assessment and adoption of the most efficient approaches in conservation enterprise execution;
  2. create awareness towards community-based natural resource enterprises
  3. optimize the existing methods, practices and processes towards improving profitable resource management

The“Conservation Enterprise Decision Support Toolkit’ will draw from program experience focusing on conservation enterprise project cycle.

The package will contain a series of modules in common format reflecting a variety of knowledge fields
  • Module 1: Project identification/selection and due diligence analysis.
  • M2: Business planning
  • M3: Project management.
  • M4: Strategic management and governance for conservation enterprises
  • M5: Designing and implementing benefit management mechanisms.
  • M6: Negotiating legal agreements.
  • M7: Integrated wildlife and livestock management.
  • M8: Establishing community wildlife management areas.
The tool will avoid site specificity and make project learning valid for wider application. It shall not suggest a course of action but present methods, approaches, and processes that provide end-users with information on how to make appropriate decisions.

Expected Outputs and deliverables
  • The technical writer shall compile, edit format and present the toolkit from technical modules already in use by the program. The final version of the complete package (tool) in appropriate format provided to by May 30th 2010.
  • The writer shall also be expected to write two modules
  1. Module5: Designing and implementing benefit management mechanisms.
  2. Module 8: Establishing community wildlife management areas by March 30thth 2010 and final modules by April 30th 2010.
  • The writer shall also be expected to develop a policy brief based on best practices and lessons learned as an annex to the tool kit.
